2011 macbook pro ssd upgrade4/15/2023 ![]() ![]() But, I want you to make the right decision, and no one else seemed to be arguing in favor of ditching it and buying a new one, so I figured I’d offer up that perspective. Like I said, that’s just for argument’s sake, because if I could afford to keep an old Mac alive that’s what I would do. Going from an old 13” MBP with Big Sur to an M1 Mini involved a lot of “holy crap, I didn’t know that feature was supposed to work like THIS!” as well as a little bit of “oh, that feature sucked because it sucks, not because of old hardware.” ![]() So even though you’d technically be able to run a more modern OS, you might not be able to take advantage of some of the features. Apple MacBook Pro 2011 (Early) (Late) 13-inch 15-inch 17-inch MacBookPro8,1 MacBookPro8,2 MacBookPro8,3 SSD RAM OSX UPGRADE Apple MacBook Pro 2011 (Late). ![]() Even though you can upgrade it to the point where it SHOULD be able to run Big Sur, there are a lot of new hardware modules on the M1 laptops that weren’t around 10 years ago, like proximity sensors, WiFi 6 support (faster, less susceptible to interference), newer Bluetooth standards, better processors (did I mention M1?), and better hardware security features like WPA3 encryption over WiFi, faster boot drive encryption, and other things that require a beefier processor which are nice to have in a modern era. I’m torn, but a lot of people are saying that you can/should so here’s my argument for why you should put the money towards a replacement instead:īetween the upgrades you’d have to do, you’re probably looking at $270, and at that point you’re well on your way to getting a new M1 Mac. ![]()
